smelled some sort of chemical as soon as they arrived on the scene. now the fire department is working to clear the chemicals. the red cross is assisting people who were evacuated. the area shut down to traffic. this is a developing situation. we will update as we get new details. now to our continuing coverage of the giants' playoff run. the bay area is abuzz with excitement as the giants prepare to play game six of the national league championship series tomorrow. thanks in large part to pitcher barry zito who led the team to victory last night. as nbc bay area's kimberly tere found. >> reporter: the giants arrived home layoff last night. winning game five in the national league championship series. the giants need to win tomorrow and then monday to make it into the world series against detroit. >> they're going to take the whole thing. they're going to do it here. >> reporter: many fans say the strength of the team has a lot to do with the bull pen and credit barry zito with keeping

the season alive. the 34-year-old has gotten some criticism for his $126 million contract and lack luster performance. last night was his first postseason game since 2006. >> i think zito actually redeemed himself from 2010, right? >> reporter: a twitter hash tag named rally zito started by a giants fan was number two worldwide last night. there were about 25,000 tweets by the time he left the game with a 5-0 lead over the cardinals. fans say they love their team and will back them all the way despite the roller coaster of emotions. >> it is the way of life. we just live for the torture. it is the only way we know. >> reporter: on the edge, i would say, there has been a lot of games and a lot of series like the last series before this one where we're biting our finger nails because they're 2-0. and then they went and won the three games which they said was impossible for any team to ever do. >> the last minute, every time.

we just enjoy it. >> that was kimberly tere reporting. the giants to have a very big week ahead of them. a win tomorrow means they play again on monday. when or if they win that game, it is on to the world series. that could mean game one is in san francisco on wednesday. first things first. fans planning to go to tomorrow's game are probably wondering what to wear, what to bring. rain is in the forecast so let's bring in meteorologist rob mayeda. >> in st. louis, we had problems with the weather. here it looks like we'll see change a little later on tomorrow. right now as things look with the start of the game just after 4:30, we should be okay. breezy with increasing clouds. as the game goes on toward the ninth inning, if there are any extra innings, that's the time we may see a few isolated showers. maybe the weather equivalent of a squeeze play. we get the game in just in time before we see showers.

you can see the changes taking place now into eureka and mt. shasta. we have the jet stream diving to the south. that will push in a lot of cool air and some rain. certainly by this time tomorrow night. and a very busy monday morning commute that packs wind, rain and sierra snow if you're heading to the high country. we'll talk more about these rapidly conditions in your seven-day forecast coming up in a few minutes. >> all right. thank you very much. bruce bochy called off today's practice but most of the team still showed up at at&t park so they did a light workout together any way. they did a little batting practice and some fielding. coming up later in sports, we'll have more on the giants including tomorrow's crucial pitching match-up. happening now, a live look as caltrans crews continue their work on this weekend's retrofit project of the san mateo bridge. caltrans claims that workers removed six deck sections and installed three new ones with joints. the bridge should reopen by 5:00

monday morning. then the san mateo bridge will close next weekend so crews can wrap things up. your best alternate routes are the done barton bridge or highway 237. new at 11:00, antioch police are investigating a brazen shooting that left one man dead and a neighborhood on edge even more rattled. it was just north of highway 4. officers responded to the call around 12:45 this afternoon. when they arrived, they pronounced a 26-year-old antioch man dead at the scene. bullet holes were found in the walls, a garage and a car. neighbors say violence is an ongoing problem. >> i'm going to have to break my lease and get out of here. it is not worth me trying to save more money. times is hard. i'm trying to save money but this ain't worth it. >> you wake up because of the shots. and i mean, we don't feel safe in here.

>> reporter: investigators are urging anyone with information on a possible suspect to come forward. you've heard of fantasy football. how about a fantasy league for sexual activity. the mercury news reports that the principal of piedmont high school informed parents by letter that some of the schools' varsity athletes set up a league in which female students were drafted as part of the league and male students earned points for documented engagement in sexual activities with those female students. the principal rich kitchens acknowledges that league has been around for at least five years. decision 2012 now. governor brown was in the bay area pushing voters to prop past 30 and reject prop 32. dozens of educators were on hand during the news conference to show their support. proposition 30 would prevent billions of dollars in cuts to schools and colleges. prop 32 prevents unions from using dues for political purposes. brown said he values the quality

of the education he got in san francisco public schools and wants to make sure that quality continues. >> we need in school, not just standardized tests that come out of some washington bureaucracy, but we also need arts programs, science programs, field trips, librarians, counsellors. >> critics of prop 30 say it doesn't guarantee any new funding for schools, that it could kill jobs and it is harmful to small businesses. the yes on prop 32 campaign argues that that proposition removes special interest money from politics. if you dialed a south bay phone number today without the area code, you might not have expected to hear this. >> this call requires that you dial a 1 or zero and the area code, along with the seven digit telephone number. >> that's right.

new details regarding the nuclear program of iran. there are reports that they have agreed to negotiations in theory for the first time. iran is insisting, however, that the talks happen after the november 6 election. the white house says it is prepared to talk one-on-one with iran to find a diplomatic settlement, though no firm details on that meeting are available just yet. this was a down day for the presidential candidates. one of the few they can expect before election day. governor mitt romney and president obama are getting ready for the debate which focuses on foreign policy. while they you know h.er down to study and practice, the vice presidential candidates took the lead on the campaign trail. paul ryan tried to turn the tide in the must-win battleground state of ohio while vice president biden was fighting for

>> reporter: welcome back to nbc bay area. the giants are preparing to stay alive. they're facing elimination once again. this time they're at home. fran will host the st. louis cardinals in game six of the nlcs tomorrow at 4:30. kim previews the showdown. >> reporter: the giants are feeling good about themselves of a winning game five.

more than half the team showed up today for an optional workout and they're certainly not stressing about game six. >> i've been told we were facing lohse. now you're saying carpenter. who are we really facing? do you know? >> i'm pretty sure it's carpenter. >> did they switch it back again on us? >> reporter: chris carpenter has been the cardinals' big game pitcher in the past winning ten postseason games. we might not see that version tomorrow night. carpenter is only his sixth start of the year after being side lined with a neck injury. >> we have to get one win. before they get two. so we'll do whatever we can. if it is tomorrow night, that's great. if it's not, we'll do it again. >> there is no tomorrow. it is a unique feeling. it has brought the best out of us. >> overseas, winner ball, 33. all the struggles. i feel like god has been using all those situations to prepare me for this postseason.

that's where my confidence comes from. >> reporter: vogelsong has every reason to be comfortable going into game six. he's held the cardinals to just one run in 14 innings this season and he's pitching at home in front of a pokd house because as you know, nothing brings out the fans like the vogy start. at at&t park with the giants, nbc bay area news. >> thank you, kim. the giants are still focused on 2012, the a's have already turned the page to 2013. oakland acquired outfielder chris young from the diamondbacks in exchange for cliff pennington and a minor league prospect. young by the way, battled injuries last season but was an all-star in 2010. over to the big games. stanford acts on the line in berkeley first quarter, first and goal. taylor finds the end zone. he would run for a career high 189 yards. 7-0, stanford.

second quarter. stanford to josh nunez. passes to a wide open player. they go on to win. they're keeping that act. it is the third big game win in a row. stanford dominating the competition, refusing to give up that act. back to you. >> thank you very much. and the meteorologist rob mayeda is here. >> the weather will be holding up but by this time tomorrow night, we'll see rain in the forecast. mostly 50s. winds out of the south in concord and we'll see some winds gusting up out of the southeast tomorrow evening and tomorrow night as theold front will be bearing down for what looks to be like a very soggy commute. we'll see winds in the afternoon. rain increasing sunday night into monday morning. as the colder air arrives, the first real dose of snowfall at 6,000 feet. good news for the raiders game.

we should see mid to upper 60s with increasing clouds but breezy at times as we go through the afternoon. the rain very likely holding off to later on in the evening. the jet stream starting to dive to the south. the futurecast paining a picture of the clouds filling in during the day. the winds picking up. you'll notice that. toward tomorrow night starting in the north bay. and then look what happens as you get toward the monday morning commute. this is the period of the wettest and windiest weather we'll see monday morning. for game seven of the national league championship series, we may have more issues to deal with in terms of the weather. scattered showers moving back in as we head into monday evening and monday night. the rainfall projections for this first storm. you can see for sunday night into monday afternoon. maybe a half inch of rain in parts of the north bay and generally, a third of an inch to a quarter of an inch. being the first significant rain of the season, be carroll on the bay area roads as the soil over the summer mixes with that rain.

tomorrow morning, no rain to worry about. a cooler day tomorrow. we'll see number mostly in the upper 60s, close to 70 in morgan hill. low 70s, closer to pleasanton around san francisco. 66 degrees, upper 60s around the north bay. so mostly cloudy finish to the weekend. mostly rainy start to monday. tuesday, could even have a chance of an isolated thundershower. then one more wave. showers shutting down for wednesday morning. for the weekend, starting to look better. we'll see the temperatures climbing up into the mid 70s. if everything goes as planned, we should be fine at the game and then game seven. >> thank you very much. tonight was the asian pacific fun foundation gala to celebrate visionary leadership and janelle wang was the mistress of sarls.

about 50 people were removed from their home. firefighters and police are helping to clear that chemical situation. the red cross also there assisting people who were displaced by the evacuation order. we'll bring you more information as we learn it. the day's big game may not have been one for the record books but we still have the play from the 30ing anniversary of the biggest play ever. live at uc berkeley with the two biggest players, that day, only one of them, a football player. >> reporter: chris, that's right. just about everyone remembers the play even though it happen 30 years ago. in a matter of seconds, two men's lives collided. >> out on the field. >> reporter: it was 1982 and cal was trailing stanford by 1. with four seconds to go in the game, stanford kicked off. the ball was lateral from player to player and as cal neared the end zone, the stanford band was

already on the field celebrating what it thought was a team victory. >> i did not realize that when the clock ran down to zero, the ball was still live. by the time i turned around to look at the field, i saw this cal player in the end zone. >> reporter: the player was kevin moen. he scored winning the game for cal but not before knocking over a young trombone player by the name of gary terrell. >> the bears have won! the bears have won! >> it was just two seconds of my life 30 years ago. but the sort of incredible thing is that probably every month of my life since then, someone has asked me about that two seconds of my life. >> it doesn't feel like it was 30 years ago. still feeling good about it. >> go cal! >> reporter: that moment is now a part of sports history and help fuel the longstanding rivalry between cal and

stanford. they attended the big game at cal today and reminisced about those few seconds that changed both of their lives three decades ago. >> a great memory to have down the row as you get older. you cherish those moments when you were a young player at cal. it is a great thing to remember. >> reporter: terrell is now the chief financial officer at a venture capital firm and moen work for caldwell banker in southern california. the two have kept in touch over the years. >> i just saw him. as he good guy as ever and you know, god bless him and his family. >> reporter: both men assure us there have never been any hard feelings. >> he kept a pretty good perspective about it. it wasn't an historical game but we kind of have some fun with it now as well. >> he wants an apology from me. >> reporter: and the trombone is now on display at the college football hall of fame. by the way, chris, stanford won

today 21-3. nbc bay area news. >> thank you very much. tonight, four time olympic gold medalist missy franklin is a golden bear. she announced today she will swim for cal, saying she instantly felt at home when she visited the university. franklin will be reunited with cal coach terry mcever who coach in london. cal, of course, is known for producing top notch swimmers including the most decorated female of all time, bay area native. the giants fans are rallying behind ryan vogelsong. take a look at. why he said he must eat chicken enchiladas for dinner the night before he pitches. his wife tweeted out a picture of his dinner. thank you so much for joining us tonight. we'll see you back here tomorrow
